Furniture designer Surface Tension has something special in store for retro gaming fans. Or more specifically, retro gaming fans who haven't yet fulf
illed their dream of turning their garage into a vintage arcade hall. Instead it has a much more subtle and modern way of sneaking some classic arcade goodness into your home, and without destroying your modern decor in the process. Surface Tension's new Arcade Coffee Tables look just like any ordinary coffee table. The controls are hidden in a drawer beneath the table, and the screen is concealed under a glass panel on top. It's perfect for when you've got the inlaws coming over for a polite lunch, but once they're out the door, you can whip out the pair of 4/8 way arcade joysticks, and four button controls. The Arcade Coffee Table is compatible with a huge list of games. That's because what you're getting here is not actually a genuine bit of vintage arcade, but an elaborate MAME emulator. That'll upset the real purists, but to be honest,
they've probably got a garden shed full of authentic chunks of ancient tech anyway. MAME is a really great piece of emulation software and while playing the old games on a modern system does little to recapture classic arcade memories, when you've got the proper retro controls and that same hunched over playing stance, it's going to make up a lot for the lack of authenticity, And the fact you can get hundreds of games for free is a nice sweetener. And there are other tricks up this coffee table's sleeve too. It'll stream your iTunes music, it'll work as a web browser, show photos and let you watch digital videos. In short, it does everything that you'd expect a computer built in to a table would do. It's £2,999 for this beast, and it's available in a walnut or oak finish.
